ten thousand hours to be great

Friday, May 15, 2015.

Oh MY! I have horrible news - I have done the math. ten thousand hours, that mythical milestone to get good at something  - at my rate of three hours a day (which is an exaggeration) times 5, d will take me twelve years to get good at Blogging.

So, if I had practiced the piano for eight hours a day, like Mr. Bedford said, and all concert pianist know to be true - four years would have been my ticket to the stage.

This is a fabulous math lesson to teach kids in grade seven.

"Hey kids - do you have any idea what you want out of life? Ten thousand hours of dedication will get you to the  chance to participate".

Seriously. Is this really guaranteed? I struggle with the idea of parenting, and how to motivate kids to try their best. I attended a wonderful surprise wedding last week - my friend who has tried her best her whole life, and has been bashed and crushed and punched, got married. She faced breast cancer, and never complained. She now has faced ovarian cancer. She did not need 10,000 hours of practice in fighting the cancer. She has faced all of her difficulties without complaining, wearing a smile and always talking about pleasant things. Am I missing the point about the axiom?

I will work on what I am trying to express for another 11 years, my time is up for tonight.

And that is how I learned that to be a part time author ain't good.
